Deep-Fried Mozzarella Sticks are the ultimate fried appetizer. Each bite begins with a deliciously crispy outer coating followed by a gooey and cheesy middle. Although typically ordered from restaurants, they are actually really quick and easy to make at home.
Deep Fried Mozzarella Sticks
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
For the Mozzarella Sticks:
- 4 whole eggs
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Pinch of red chili flakes
- 10 mozzarella cheese sticks
- Vegetable oil for frying
For the Quick Tomato Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 8 cloves garlic sliced
- Pinch of red chili flakes
- 1 large can 28 ounces whole peeled tomatoes
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
Instructions
For the Mozzarella Sticks:
- To prepare the breading station, place three wide bowls on the counter. Beat the eggs in one bowl using a fork. Place the flour in the second bowl and panko breadcrumbs in the third bowl. Season the breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, oregano, and red chili flakes.
- Place each mozzarella cheese stick into the flour, then egg, back into the flour, back into the egg, and finally coat with the breadcrumbs. Place on a large plate and repeat with the rest. Place the plate of coated mozzarella cheese sticks into the fridge until ready to fry.
- Meanwhile, heat a large pot of oil to 375 degrees Ferinhight. Fry the mozzarella sticks in small batches until golden brown, 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to drain off excess oil. Serve immediately with the Quick Tomato Sauce.
For the Quick Tomato Sauce:
- Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan. Add in the sliced garlic and fry for 1-2 minutes. Meanwhile, pour the canned tomatoes in a large bowl and crush with your hands. Season with red chili flakes and fry for an additional 30 seconds. Add in the tomatoes and cook, stirring every few minutes, for 15-20 minutes, until reduced. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Serve warm with mozzarella sticks.
